I gave kde4 from openSUSE Build Service repository a try and here are the screenies to compare the two. More on it later.

Can I add that repo and upgrade packages?
Is it stable or will I corrupt my suse 10.2 kde3 installation?

It is not stable, it can corrupt user settings, but not kde3 installation. If you want to give it a try add the repository and log in as test user.

So, the libs can coexist in the system then?
How do I make that a test user logs in with qt3/kde3 and a test user does so with 1t4/kde4? I am most interested in testing speed improvements.
Would it suffice to back up ~/.kde if used by a normal user?

kde4 is installed in /opt/kde4 and kde3.5 is installed in /opt/kde3 so no issues about getting your libs mixed up.
Backing up ~/.kde would be a good idea. At the KDM/GDM login screen user can select kde3/kde4 to log into along with gnome and other DEs.
Word of warning, kcontrol was empty so I could not customize the look and feel of kde4.
