Compiz-Fusion arrives

A new merged community around Compiz project would be known as Compiz-Fusion, details of the announcement here on Compiz Mailing List.
It is not just a new name, quitely behind the scenes developers have been working hard and have come up with some stunning enhancements.
Zoom plugin has been almost rewritten by David Reveman with cool new features like select and zoom and panning, Cube has got reflection thanks to great work by Onestone, there is now expo mode that can be used along with Cube.
Size information upon resizing any window, paint fire on your desktop and other countless useful and no so useful features have been added to plugins. We also got new animation effect “Dodge”, one of my favourite.
Compiz also now has two settings tool, users can easily tweak compiz settings to their liking.

TheMacThinker, did you read the post? It’s for Linux. It will do wonders for the people who couldn’t care less about Leopard coming. People who don’t want to pay for an OS, or run overpriced hardware, will find this interesting, if they care about eye candy.
Or if you’re just trying to push mac propaganda, carry on. I’m sure that will help.

I think “Compiz” anything is a horrible name. It’s cacophonic, has ambiguous pronunciations, and is generally an ugly word: the exact opposite of the program itself, which my daily computing would definitely suffer without.

I love the reflections. Very clean… I am a big fan of Beryl and look forward to seeing what the merger will bring.
The trick to all direct rendering(things like this) on Linux is to not use ATI. This has less to do with the application and more to do with the fact that ATI doesn’t support Linux… er at least doesn’t support it well.
Again can’t wait to see the new product…

Dude, keep taking your meds and everything will be just fine. Mac OS is fine for someone who can spend the $$$ to get it. I threw my tax return at one this year and can’t be happier, but it’s not the “end all, be all” of computing.
I like Linux because of it’s open nature and the versatility it has. Compiz has done an excellent job at helping Linux look attractive as a Desktop with it’s bling factor. And without the big money budget of MS or Apple. I think they should be commended.

I agree with Landslide. Compiz is a terrible name. I like the name Beryl better, but it still doesn’t mean anything. It needs a gorgeous name, like the product itself:
I’ll throw out some names: Jewel, Diamond, Cubicon, Cubalicious, Bling, Blingux, Blinux, BlingThing, Candy.

I have to partially agree with landslide. While I’m glad Beryl & Fusion got back together, “Compiz Fusion” is not a great name. Why not drop both the Beryl and Compiz names and call it Fusion? I think that sounds way cooler.
And I can’t wait to have this! :)Jerry is right though, we really do need better fonts. Isn’t there someone in the *nix community who is good with fonts that could volunteer a little time for this? I’m not good with fonts, I just know enough to notice and appreciate nice ones when I see them.

One thing’s for sure this is a very exciting time for Linux.
There’s a very cool Youtube video comparing Vista’s Aero to Beryl, which proves that Beryl knocks the socks off Aero.
Beryl, at the moment, comes pretty close to Mac too.
Hopefully Compiz-Fusion will knock the socks off of both…

One gripe I have though is the mission it was to install Beryl hopefully Compiz-Fusion takes care of many of the installation/compatibility issues that exist with the multitude of hardware and distros.

I think this is a politically charged and very sad move. Why call it Compiz? You know, Beryl was starting to grow on me… I think ‘fusion’ would be a happier name too.
Beryl just sounds good, and has cool properties.

It reverted to the name Compiz because Beryl was a fork. They finally got their wits about them and re-merged because it’s stupid to have two projects doing ostensibly the *same exact thing*, but using up more resources than necessary in the process.

Beryl is the family of stone containing emeralds, red-emeralds, aquamarines, and several other colors of stone. The red beryls (or red emeralds) are so rare they are only mined in one mountain range in Utah in the US.
The program Beryl’s icon is a faceted red beryl. It actually says so in their literature somewhere. Both the stone and the program are rare and gorgeous if I may put my two cents to the topic.

Install Mepis 6.502, install Nvidia drivers for your video card (has also ATI), and enable 3D effect at login. Works smooth on 4 years old machine. P-2,4G with 1G RAM. In my experience Linux is developing some 3-4 times faster than Windows.

I’m disapointed. I didnt contribute. I didnt suggest a new name.
I saw some interesting suggestions. And I really expected coral to be the name.
This name is politics. It leaves a bitter aftertaste. Compiz fusion will be compiz again in a few months. And all the beryl stuff will be forgotten. How sad.

The only thing keeping the Linux community from simply taking the best eye candy from MS or Apple is lawsuits. And if anything, most of what you see with OS X is offered in Linux anyway. Spaces for Leopard is simply Workspaces on any Linux distro. If Apple were to offer Leopard and beyond to all PC’s, they might actually have an opportunity to become the most popular and widely used OS, especially since they’re low-balling MS anyway for their own hardware. All Apple OS X is, is simply ahead of a handful of pay-per-use Linux distros and as the open source version of that gets better, that perception will disappear too. Apple has come full circle and is using Intel X86 hardware, all that’s left, is to become a universal Operating system for all hardware lines. If only they’d realize it and accept their own fate.

Beryl, Compiz etc will likely never port to Microsoft software because:
1. The developers simply don’t like M$
2. Windows is so bloated that it just cant handle 3D stuff without requiring a 4GHz gaming PC to switch between windows (94% of PCs cannot run vista with 3D effects).
3. Making an efficient composite desktop requires that you know how the OS works, as it is proprietary nobody outside of Redmond has a good idea of how windows works (or doesn’t work).
If you desperately want 3D stuff in windows get “Yod’m 3D”, it is a rotating cube for XP.
If you want proper 3D effects, get linux, you can still run XP/Vista for your games. If you rig up a virtual machine with “virtualbox” you can even pretend windows was never there.

What`s the big deal with the name?
I don`t get it in my humble opinion, they could call it “garbage dump”, as long as it will keep providing these ubercool effects.
Don`t like the name, then go edit the sourcecode rewrite the name to your liking, after all it`s open source, the name doesn`t matter because the thing that realy matters is what you see, because that`s what you get is what you see, not the name of the project.
About Vista
Yeah go get an expensive operating system that needs 16GB of hard disk space for nothing, it must be better than getting linux+compiz fusion for free. Vista has only a few effects, only few(or maybe only one) window decoration, etc. where compiz has a lot of effects and countless window decorations, yeah tough choice.
About Mac
Give me a break this is worst than Vista, you need to buy exotic hardware just to run this OS?Let`s see, linux runs on PC and runs on MAC, leopard runs only on a MAC(don`t say that it runs on the PC too, without explaining where the hell do you get the drivers for it).Let`s face it MAC boys just love to spend thousands of dollars just to get a false feeling of security.
Compiz is evolving at a way faster rate than tha MAC OS or Vista just think about it, MAC has been doing this for years, it took Vista 5 years to do this, but how long was Compiz around?

Everyone of my buddies who check out my Compiz/Fusion system need to pick up their jaw from the floor.

my 2 cents about system reqs:
i use a 1 ghz athlon with 512 mb ram. an geforce 4 mx and that’s it, fusion works, i work with fusion, even with fullscreen video on one of my 6 desktops working ist no problem… linux shows us what 1 ghz can handle…

To Win users: reboot and put linux livecd and select install. You´ll have this Compiz.
Just an idea: let? make just another fork of 3D project, make it proprietary, and sell it to Gates and Ballmer at a bloody-damn-super-high price. This has 3 purposes:
1. To teach them how to feel about paying f**king high-price just for one thing. This should educate and behave them nicely.
2. Compiz can use the money to build the next step of Fusion intensively, which will be the most fantastic visualization tool a desktop should ever have, and be the standard desktop for Linux.
2. If Redmond buys the source (at the bloody-damn-super high price), they?l develop a bloody-damn-super-high-price Windows, that will just make its fans turn to Linux!! .. haha

I use ATI Radeon X300 to, with opensource driver (ati). both beryl and compiz work nicely :D. now, i use compiz fusion
note: i didn’t do any special configuration.

why are you not packaging fusion-icon with it?
for some reason also, your emerald-theme-manager build (in my case) is unable to show me any engines or modify current themes. Is there any reason for that? I would like to know.

Just compiled beryl and compiz-fusion on Slackware v12 and I’ve found the effects, or many of them, to actually be useful as well as gorgeous. So far Beryl is a little easier to use than compiz-fusion but I have high hopes for subsequent releases.
For you guys complaining about fonts in linux there are some excellent “how-to’s” you can find with google, google/linux, or whatever you prefer for search engines. A dreat deal can be accomplished with very simple editing of the xorg.conf file, sometimes even just changing the order so higher resolution fonts load first makes a huge difference. Then there’s the obvious of downloading newer fonts. There is also a great deal of help on IRC channels devoted to font development which is actually a fairly high priority. After a half hour of tweaking you can really get the most out of your compiz-fusion bling.

I couldn’t agree more. I had to suffer using mac at a school I was at recently. Students called it ‘crashintosh’. I’d never seen such a pathetic attempt at desktop and networking. It was down 50% of the time. Each box cost Euros 1850 WITHOUT the monitor. And then one wonders why Jobs sells glorified blueberry flavour iPods at twice the price of a proper mp3 player in an attempt to print money. I’m amazed at anyone who buys crashintosh. They have more money than sense. The term ‘Macbore’ really should get into wikipedia. Have you ever talked to anyone who uses a crashintosh? What a bore. Let’s just get on with the job. Jesus. What a waste of time. Just show them what a $500 box with native nVidia can do with compiz and kiba-dock and they tend to shut the * up. Timewasters.
