Want to take compiz-fusion for a test ride?

If you are running openSUSE 10.2 follow these steps to get test packages of compiz-git, compiz-fusion-plugins and CompizConfig Settings Manager.
Be warned that these are test packages, so package names and many other things will change shortly. For everyday use I would advise not to install these packages and wait for proper release. There is absolutely no guarantee that these packages will work on your system.
1. As root run rpm -e compiz compiz-gnome compiz-kde (Remove previous compiz install completely)
2. download and install yast2-meta-package-handler
3. Fire up konqueror and click on this:
4. Launch compiz with the following command once installation is done (double dashes in front of replace):
compiz –replace ccp &
Start new settings manager:
ccsm &
Select all the plugins you like including “decoration” plugin, Add “your(changethis)-window-decorator –replace” as command string under ‘decoration’ plugin. Set ‘Focus Effect’ to ‘Dodge’.
If anyone has problem using these packages on Xgl, please update Mesa from this repository: XORG72
This is what you would get.
Jakub I am using Tango icons this time around ![]()
Edit: Please use the latest yast2-metapackage-handler from the build service repository only.

Hello
Great work!
In fact, I use Smart to pick up the packages, so I want ask you if you can tell us the link of the repodata, please
Thank you.
: jigish.gohil, June 23, 2007 @ 2:27 pm
Pick openSUSE_10.2 or SUSE_Factory if using 10.3 Alphas/Betas from here:
http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/
Just select compiz-git-all and rest of the packages should be pulled automatically.
Fastest way is just two commands as root:
zypper sa http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/yoursuseversion ctest
zypper in compiz-git-all

Well, it was a bit of a hussle, but I’ve got it working, the new stuff is looking great. Do you know how to get the emerald decorator working?
Thanks for all your time and the good work!
: Ray, June 23, 2007 @ 4:30 pm
I just discovered that there is also a new package for emerald that works with the new fusion.
D**n, this is nice eyecandy!

i need grafic card?? to instal this compiz???
: danilo, July 3, 2007 @ 9:26 pm
ya i guess you need a graphic card, else you won’t see anything
the question is: do you need a good graphic card?
answer: even most old graphic cards work with xgl/compiz.

FYI, I’ve unfortunately I’ve had no luck with the packages.
When using AIGLX, compiz gives the error:
compiz: No GLXFBConfig for default depth, this isn’t going to work.
compiz: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
I have 3d acceleration enabled (but without DRI).
I tried to setup XGL as per the Suse wiki (ick, most of the instructions don’t work) and finally got it working. However when I test-launch an Xgl server on DISPLAY=:1 from my current X server like so…
% sudo Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv &; sleep 8; DISPLAY=:1 compiz –replace –indirect-rendering &; sleep 2; DISPLAY=:1 emerald –replace &;
Compiz segfaults when Emerald tries to launch. Infact I haven’t been able to get any of the window decorators to work. Compiz segfaults if any application is running on the Xgl server (whether or not the app was started before Compiz launched).
Hmm… (I wonder if a bad font path could be causing this issue, as those are the only warnings I’m getting)
: lin, July 10, 2007 @ 11:17 am
dude where do i find focus effect –> dodge??
: osiris, July 10, 2007 @ 1:48 pm
hi, is there a compiz-git-kde package for opensuse 10.2 x86_64 ?
i can only find it for 32bits and i use 64 bits and with the 32bit package kde-window-decorator blows up.
: jigish.gohil, July 10, 2007 @ 1:57 pm
@osiris no, not yet, i have not been able to build it for x86_64, you can use gtk-window-decorator or emerald instead.
@lin in ccsm
@Mats the above instructions assume you have working Xgl/Compiz setup first
@mick not if you got Intel video chipset

Hello
There is a problem after installing this package “compiz-git-all” . The problem is after typing “compiz –replace ccp &” , this problem appeared “Trying ‘/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1?
ERROR: ld.so: object ‘/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1? from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension
”
how to solve this problem …. because compiz+beryl is a GREAT CHOICE
: maffo, July 13, 2007 @ 2:17 pm

: leo, July 14, 2007 @ 8:36 pm
Above message about
” ERROR: ld.so: object ‘/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1? from LD_PRELOAD ”
and the Composite extension missing appeared here too. The composite extention error is gone after applying above suggestion, but the libIndirectGL message is still there, and although compiz seem to start, I have no titlebars, borders, etc..
I’m sure compiz and gtk-window-decorator are running after starting them since I can grep them on “ps ax”
Any suggestion?
(running on Dell Inspiron 9400 with ATI Radeon Mobility X1400, OpenSUSE 10.2)
: jigish.gohil, July 15, 2007 @ 8:08 am
” ERROR: ld.so: object ‘/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1? from LD_PRELOAD ”
The above error will go away if you get the latest Mesa packages from this repo:
http://software.opensuse.org/download/xorg72/openSUSE_10.2/
For no decoration, check ccsm to see if you have ‘decoration’ plugin enabled.
: leo, July 15, 2007 @ 10:47 pm
Thanks jigish,
I got the libIndirectGL error fixed indeed. But the decoration still doesn’t show up despite an activated decorator plugin.
BTW, I get the following warning several times when I start gtk-window-decorator in replace mode. Don’t know if it means anything.
(gtk-window-decorator:4927):
Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type (nil)
Apart from that no error messages.
My libwnck version libwnck-2.18.0-28.1
I tried emerald as well. With exactly the same results.
: Pacheco, July 16, 2007 @ 5:04 pm
compiz –replace ccp &
[1] 26170
linux-m4xa:/home/pacheco # compiz: Trying ‘/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1′
compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension
[1]+ Exit 1 compiz –replace ccp
Is this done, or is an error? if it’s how to get around?
: steve, July 18, 2007 @ 5:17 pm
It works but the ccsm has no effect upon my settings. i have to use the old compz stuff like:
compiz –replace dbus decoration minimize place wobbly fade cube rotate switcher move resize scale water &
for any changes to be made. Any ideas of how to get the (nice) new menu to make things happen?

: dante, July 19, 2007 @ 10:58 pm
i’m getting a headache installing compiz fusion…
i do all that instructions said, but i still have an error…
maybe this could help things go easier to newbies…

compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension
i’ve put the things right in the Xorg.conf, used
section extensions

Endsection

plzzz help!!!
: mark_kiddy, July 22, 2007 @ 7:39 am
Hi
Your RPM packages installs and works ok - but opensuse10.2/nvidia 100.14.11 without XGL hangs kde everytime on logout - (black screen with mouse cursor - only SAK works). So I decided to compile compiz from git repository. and now strange thing : compiz-git compiled successfully and works without problems but i can’t compile fusion-plugins ( gcc says “duplicate case value”). see here http://forums.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1481
any ideas ?
: Rob, July 22, 2007 @ 9:39 am
Dante & Mark. I have Suse 10.2 Gnome + Nvidia running XGL and this worked for me.
Disable XGL by running in a terminal as root “gnome-xgl-switch –disable-xgl” and restart your xserver.
Then enable XGL from YaST2 -> System -> /etc/sysconfig-editor then go to Desktop -> Display Manager -> displaymanager_xserver and change xorg to xgl. Restart xserver.
Run “compiz –replace ccp&” and “emerald –replace&”.
This worked for me and to autostart compiz I added “compiz –replace ccp” line to Start Programs in Sessions.
Good luck I hope it helps someone.
: Rob, July 22, 2007 @ 9:41 am
PS. read - - where it says … –disable… and … –replace
: sod/sgt-d, July 29, 2007 @ 2:21 pm
hmm… anyone having a problem with the shift switcher plugin?
it’s the only plugin that is giving me problems - at least that i’ve noticed so far.
suse 10.3 alpha 5 and displaymanager_xserver = xgl.
if i only have 1 window open, the plugin seems to work correctly… the window drops to the background a little in either cover or flip mode… and if i move the mouse up or down it goes through it’s animation.
if i have more than 1 window open, as soon as i hit shift+super+s, all of the windows snap to an almost full screen variation of “cascade” and the plugin fails to work at all, no animations.
: sod/sgt-d, July 29, 2007 @ 2:23 pm
grr, i tried it with other window decorators too, same problem.
: jigish.gohil, July 29, 2007 @ 2:26 pm
I think you have shift +super +s mapped to tile plugin. Shift works fine use need to use the correct keys ;).
: sod/sgt-d, July 29, 2007 @ 6:05 pm
ahh, conflicting keys grr. ok, i set shift to shift+super+d and OMG!!!
thanks

nvidia SuSE 10.2
I disabled xgl and followed the native nvidia instructions here:
http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl#Beryl_with_nVidia_drivers_-_no_Xgl.2FAIGLX
The bits that seem to do the trick are:
nvidia-xconfig –composite
nvidia-xconfig –allow-glx-with-composite
nvidia-xconfig –render-accel
nvidia-xconfig –add-argb-glx-visuals
All the stuff in ccsm now works smoothly and without jerky movements.
Question. After configuring this I can’t get back to ordinary kde without uninstalling the compiz stuff. Compiz loads automagically no what. Is there and easy way to choose?
Great work the compiz team.
hth Steve.
: steve, July 29, 2007 @ 9:09 pm
Forgot to say. Trying to log out it freezes solid. Workaround: drop to runlevel 3 first.
: sod/sgt-d, July 30, 2007 @ 6:17 pm
xgl… if i knew what i was doing i would probably stay with it… but nvidia is so much simpler to setup for dual monitors. sax2 just bitches alot and tells me my chipset is not 3d capable, and then it never detects my second monitor.
i was getting almost the same framerate (compiz benchmark) in xgl mode as i was in xorg + nvidia, so i’m not seeing a benefit to switching.
oh, and in xorg/nvidia mode, compiz was trying to run on both monitors which was cool as shit… but proved to be pretty unstable at least for me. i noticed that each monitor had their own set of compiz settings, so i could control them individually (a nice surprise), but ultimately compiz and sometimes the compiz settings manager would lock up the entire system in dual monitor mode.
to force it to the current screen only i had to add “–only-current-screen” which means i also have to launch it manually instead of having kde start it for me.
eg:
compiz –only-current-screen –replace ccp &
emerald –replace &
nice work… i’ve been dying to check out compiz fusion ever since i heard it was coming.

I’m trying to compile from sources too, but I’m getting some errors, like these:
“Please add the files
codeset.m4 gettext.m4 glibc21.m4 iconv.m4 isc-posix.m4 lcmessage.m4
progtest.m4
from the /opt/gnome/share/aclocal directory to your autoconf macro directory
or directly to your aclocal.m4 file.
You will also need config.guess and config.sub, which you can get from
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/config/.”
I found all these files in /usr/share/aclocal/ except isc-posix.m4…
Can You advice me?
