1-click to install NVIDIA/ATI binary blobs

Now that openSUSE 10.3 is all installed, Compiz users might want a handy links to 1-click NVIDIA and ATI driver installer, so here they are:
Recent NVIDIA drivers can run compiz without the need for AIGLX/XGL, disable Xgl (gnome-xgl-switch –disable-xgl) , run the following and restart X:
su nvidia-xconfig --composite nvidia-xconfig --allow-glx-with-composite nvidia-xconfig --render-accel nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals
1-Click icon set thanks to FunkyPenguin’s blog. 1-click YMP(YaST MetaPackage) from Francis Giannaros posted on openSUSE wiki pages for NVIDIA and ATI.
Edit: Please check the manufacturer’s links above to find out if your hardware is supported by 1-click installer.

Thanks for the info Cyberorg, and all your good work,
Note for ATI users though.Had a look at the Opensuse Wiki (http://en.opensuse.org/ATI#The_Easy_Way) and is says there:
“openSUSE 10.3
There are known problems with the driver from the 10.3 repository at the moment, which are being investigated; we don’t recommend that you install the below just yet”
Hope that helps.

Now look again at the link you posted:
openSUSE 10.3
You can use 1-click-install:
* Just click on this: ati.ymp
* Restart the X server: Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

Ok, a little confused. I have opensuse 10.3 and kde. I installed the nvidia driver via 1-click. Worked great. When I try to enable Compiz-Fusion I get a white screen. Of course that was after I enabled Xgl. Plus, after I enable Xgl I loose 3d acceleration.
If I use “regular” Compiz (is there such a thing?) and enable it with the opensuse-xgl-settings application I can at least get some wobbly windows without it white screening on me on log in.
So to understand your post, I should not be using Xgl with Compiz-Fusion and the new nvidia driver? I thought Xgl had to be running in order to use Compiz.
I use kde but I like the gnome window decorations better.

You can use either Xgl or plain new nvidia drivers after running the commands on the post.
No, there is only one compiz, if opensuse-xgl-settings app works for you keep using that to activate compiz.

ok cyberorg. thanks for the reply.

Robin, look a little above that… It currently says under “The Easy Way”:
“Users of non-Radeon HD cards should skip these directions and do things The Hard Way. Unfortunately, the version of fglrx in the official package repository for 10.3 (and used by the 1-click-install) is not recommended by AMD for any non-HD cards, and is known to be broken on AGP 4th and 5th generation radeons (ie. the AGP x700, x1300, x1600, etc.)”

White Screen seems to happen when nvidia was used with
Displamanger = Xgl - reset this to Xorg works on my System.
As written above: Nvidia includes own xgl - i read about that this
worked only on nvidia 7xxx and 8xxx Cards - i use an 8600gts.
Also like this: black Sreen, crashing Blankermodules and crashes
after starting 3D Programms.
Also a Tipp: set the VGA mode on Kerneloptions to nothing,
some Problems seems to be with higher Console resolution.
( Vesa Framebuffer ) - Nvidia seems to work on it.
Problems depends on nvidia/compiz - not on this fine oneclick
Install !
( But i have installed all this by Hand
)

I’m a newbie to linux and after reading through different distro’s I settled with openSuse 10.3 gnome. I have HP Pavilion dv6000 with NVIDIA GeForce 7200 GO. After OS installation I installed latest NVIDIA drivers with 1-click. Later I installed Compiz-Fusion from en.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion. First thing I did before installing Compiz-Fusion was enabled “Desktop Effects” from Control Center. After compiz-fusion installation I restarted X and when I gave compiz-manager all I see is a white screen. I have to start a new console login, kill gdm and then start gdm again. Can anyone please help me with the problem.

Hi there, i have openSuse 10.3 and my a laptop with ATI Mobility Radeon X700.
I installed the drivers with 1-click-install, but now i can’t use xgl, when i enable desktop effects the X server doesn’t start, it gives me this error:
xcb_xlib.c:52: xcb_xlib_unlock: Assertion `c->xlib.lock’ failed
i tried to export the sloppy lock to 1, but it doesn’t work.
anyone can help me?
Thanks

@Jose Quaresma Please see http://en.opensuse.org/ATI as 1-click drivers are not meant for your card, see the “hard way” to install the .40 drivers.
@Pradeep killall -9 compiz a few times from another terminal and try launching compiz manually with “compiz –replace ccp& and gtk-window-decorator –replace&
Check the wiki page to change /usr/bin/gnome-wm.

i used the ati drivers from the repository, and it gives me the same error, those drivers are the same as the ones from the 1-click-install right?
i have to install it using ati-driver-installer-8.40.4? but that driver doesn’t have the option for suse 10.3, i use the one for suse 10.2?
thnx a lot
Jose

@jose, install kernel source, development packages and run:
init 3
sh /path/to/ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run
After installing the drivers , just run:
aticonfig –initial –input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf –force
And init 5
Do not use sax2 if it does not work for you, aticonfig bit is enough.

i did what you said, glxinfo and fgl_glxgears are working fine, but i’m not able to use desktop effects, it says my card is supported but i’m not able to enable 3D accelaration…
again, i’m really thankfull for your time.
Jose

don’t use sax to enable 3D, just run compiz-manager.
: Jose Quaresma, October 18, 2007 @ 3:45 pm
i’ve done like you said and it works great now!
thanks

HP Compaq NX9600 laptop review…
The HP Compaq NX9600 is a good laptop notebook, bot it is better off as a desktop replacement because of its weight. Anyway what matters differ, as we are going to look at its attractive features. If you want to buy a strong laptop notebook, that is me…
