Introducing the real 3D Compiz!
by cyberorg, Thursday, November 1st, 2007 @ 9:12 pm

Wodor has hacked together an anaglyph plugin for Compiz that turns ordinary monitor into a real 3D one. The blurry image you see below is an anaglyph rendered by the plugin, you need 3D glasses or use anything transparent red (left eye) and cyan(right eye) to view the magic.click to enlarge

Click the image to view it enlarged, you should see desktop icons drop back and windows floating in air.

Although I do not think that people would be wearing funny glasses all day long to work on their PC, possibilities this plugin presents are quite exciting for gamers and everyone wanting to show off the ‘real’ 3D desktop.

The plugin is in testing/unstable/unsupported home:cyberorg git repository.

Edit: Few more images and source tarball here: http://wodor.org/anaglyph/

To make 3D desktops really interesting for consumers we need to get rid of the glasses and loss of color depth. You would need a special 3D screen for that, but Phillips has these already on the market.

I’ve made some quick’n'dirty content for this screen and the effect is really great and the technique extremely easy to work with. Too bad that for now it only works with bmp and mov files and OpenGL.

If only the OS would support the technique it would be able to handle anything, though! And then it’d be interesting for end-consumers to buy such a screen.

    install this pattern:

    http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_10.3/compiz-fusion-devel.ymp

it will install all the deps.

However it is part of compiz-fusion-git packages, just install this and you have this as well as many other extra plugins:
