Getting NVIDIA and ATI drivers on openSUSE 11.0
by cyberorg, Friday, June 13th, 2008 @ 4:41 pm

openSUSE 11.0 just went Gold, and would be available on mirrors in 5 days, here is a handy guide to get ATI and NVIDIA drivers, use whichever way that suite you.

Or commandline friendly

su -c “OCICLI http://opensuse-community.org/ati.ymp”

su -c “OCICLI http://opensuse-community.org/nvidia.ymp”

One more commandline way via zypper:

NVIDIA:

zypper sa http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.0 nvidia

zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG01

ATI:

zypper sa http://www2.ati.com/suse/11.0 ati

zypper in  x11-video-fglrxG01

No manual configuration of xorg.conf or switching on Xgl required to get compiz goodness, just launch simple-ccsm and enable compiz from there after installing the drivers.

I think it should be “NVIDIA drivers” and not “NVIDIA”, just like it is “ATI drivers”, in the green image.

@debarshi Please fit it in and I’ll be happy to use the image created by you ;)

My nVidia card doesn’t work, because nvidia module wont load :/ .

  10. : Nathan, June 18, 2008 @ 6:16 pm

Does this work for legacy ati drivers as well?

  11. : combuster, June 18, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

On openSUSE 11.0 RC1 live GNOME one click nVIDIA installer wont work, installing from nVIDIA repository will not work either, driver module is not loading during startup, and sax2 -r -m nvidia=0 does not recognize the graphics card. Only thing that works is compiling the driver (kernel source is required) but whenever i have to update kernel the driver must be compiled again. Kind of a hassle. I sincerely hope that it will be fixed with 11.0 GM. GreetZ from Serbia!

  12. : cyberorg, June 19, 2008 @ 4:54 am

The drivers are for 11.0 GM.

  13. : ATI skeptic, June 19, 2008 @ 1:27 pm

Will the fglrx drivers work in OpenSuse 11.0, or will they tank like they did in 10.3?

  14. : polrus, June 19, 2008 @ 4:06 pm

the problem that driver module is not loading during startup still exists with todays GM - so simply what You wrote will not work for NVIDIA - the problem is also that Sax is not able to return to nv driver when You have nvidia driver installed and unexperienced user can be locked in text mode. What helps is running
    sax2 -r 0=nv

    SAD :(

  15. : cyberorg, June 19, 2008 @ 5:45 pm

Works for me, tested both ATI and NVIDIA drivers on GM

  16. : Ian, June 19, 2008 @ 11:29 pm

I also have the problem after installing NVidia drivers using this link X won’t start after the reboot due to a missing kernel module. Looking around the web a LOT of people seem to be having this problem…

Any idea when it will be fixed?

  17. : combuster, June 20, 2008 @ 4:04 pm

I think that users with AGP cards have problems, precompiled nvidia module does not recognize the installed card… Ian, are u using PCI-E or a AGP card?

  18. : Eugene, June 20, 2008 @ 8:19 pm

    Hi,

I can not make my ATI Radeon X1200 work under Suse 11.0 (64 bit), it wokr under Suse 10.3, I am thinking about going back :-(

    any idea?

  19. : cyberorg, June 20, 2008 @ 8:26 pm

    Try running “sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx” (for ati) “sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia” after installing drivers from runlevel 3. See also:

    http://en.opensuse.org/ATI

    http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA

For support of the drivers check out the manufacturers’ bug tracker and forums.

  20. : Eugene, June 21, 2008 @ 12:38 am

Thanx for info, but I tried that before still black screen.
I don’t know how to install drivers from run level 3 since there is no rpm available.
May be I am not an experienced user but I was experienced enough to install these drivers under 10.3 (not via one click)

No manual config of xorg.conf my &*&*.
I loaded the one-click after my 11.0 install and immediately got a White screen of Compiz death. Had to copy over my xorg.conf from my backup file (a working AIGLX conf) to get it working.

    ATI x1400 is the card.

  23. : cyberorg, June 22, 2008 @ 9:22 am

    @Combadoc : try running sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx before manual configuration.

Start compiz using compiz-manager to avoid white screen of death.

    Hi!

Sorry, how does one DISABLE compiz? Once I had this lovely icon on the panel which allowed to choose between compiz/kwin whatever, but it’s gone for good! And now every time I log in compiz starts, which doesn’t let me watch videos (e.g. using mplayer), so I have to kill it everytime and replace with kwin! Nowhere in the config files or dialogs was I able to find where to disable it! Please help!

    Thanks

  32. : cyberorg, July 2, 2008 @ 5:29 pm

If you have X11:XGL repository enabled “zypper in fusion-icon” you will then have your lovely icon :)

To disable use simple-ccsm, that is where compiz switch is.

  33. : Dich, July 8, 2008 @ 2:39 pm

Great, I got the icon, still, every time I log in, it FIRST starts the compiz, THEN, if I start the fusion-icon - it “realizes” KWin is the default and switches back… rather frustrating… Where’s the bloody setting for no-compiz-at-all startup?
