Making progress…
by marex, Friday, September 28th, 2007 @ 7:54 pm

So, it has been a busy week, but I was able to work a bit on simple-ccsm. You can actually already use it as settings manager, but the profiles are still missing.

What I implemented since the last post are the custom widgets for stars and desktop preview. Also I added a automatic settings rating system to score your animation and effect settings. My very lets says “minimalistic” animation settings (fade animation only) scores less then 2 stars (from 5 possible stars). It would be nice if I could get some feedback about the scores you archive with your settings to maybe adjust the values a bit.

Here are a few new screenshots of simple-ccsm for you:

Profiles

Animations

Desktop

I also added a build system to simple-ccsm so it should be quite easy to install it properly. The build system itself was ported from ccsm, which was mostely written by Guillaume.

You can clone the git repository of simple-ccsm with the following command:

git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/users/marex/simple-ccsm

In other news, lives goes along well. Holidays are near. ;-)

Nice. I really look forward to this, especially to the default profiles.

Did you think about adding a “Corners and Edges”-tab? Configuring the corners and edges in CCSM is a real pain, since some settings are hidden in “General” and the rest can be found at the appropriate plugin. Maybe you could add such a tab to the next release (I know the first one isn’t even out).

The default configuration should be that no actions are bound to the edges or corners, since you never know, what the user might accidentally start. Also GNOME and KDE-users usually employ different edges for accessing their menus (upper-left vs lower-left) and those should better be left unassigned.

Yeah I’m probably going to add another tab for important key bindings and screen edges in the near future.
But the next thing on my list is adding an accessibility tab. :-)

Concerning the screen edges off by default, you are probably right that it is confusing for some users, but for now I think default plugin settings are ok. At least until we have an easy way to enable screen edges.

    This is off topic, sorry…

I like Screenlets, don’t get me wrong, but the developer of Jackfield has been asking for help. Any chance you compiz-fusion guys/girls could offer some assistance or offer a possible merger? Jackfield looks very promising. It offers/will offer support for Apple’s Dashboard Widgets, Yahoo!’s Widgets, Microsoft’s Gadget Sidebar Widgets, and Opera Widgets, and you can write your own. This is much better than what Screenlets has to offer IMO. My questions are…

    1. Any chance you compiz-fusion/compiz guys/girls/developers could offer some assistance to the Jackfield project?
    2. Is there any chance of getting something like Jackfield added as a widget layer/plugin in compiz-fusion?

    Thanks,

Erm, screenlets is not even part of Compiz Fusion. It’s developed and maintained by Rico (RYX).

Yes, I know, but it has a “Widget” plugin in Compiz Fusion Settings that allows you to integrate it with Compiz Fusion.

My other question was to see if some devs that are familiar with composite applications would like to assist with the project to get the ball rolling. I figured the Compiz/Compiz Fusion devs are probably most qualified for this.
